The Kaliningrad Art Gallery is one of the youngest and largest galleries in Russia in terms of the area of exhibition spaces and contemporary art collections. During its 20-year history the institution has become the main art museum of the region which is famous both in Russia and Europe. Annually the 8 exhibition halls of over 3000m2 gather over 40 exhibitions and art projects organized jointly with Russian and international museums and cultural institutions.
The museum’s collection consists of almost 12000 paintings, sculpture, photography, graphic art and applied art works.
Main areas of activity include research, cultural, educational, publishing, museum and teaching activities. The gallery has a lecture hall for university and school students, children’s art studio and the Virtual branch of the State Russian Museum (Saint-Petersburg) and holds regular research conferences.
In 2008 the Kaliningrad Art Gallery won the National Russian Contest “Changing Museum in a Changing World” and received a grant from theV.Potanin Foundation for the implementation of the project “Where does an artist work?”
In 2007 the gallery participated in the National Russian project “Museum. Music. Children”.
Since 1992 the museum has been holding the Baltic Biennale of Graphic Art “Kaliningrad –Königsberg” — the largest-scale regional international project which made it possible to create one of the best collections of graphic art across the country. Such collections as facsimile Western European prints, E. Belutin’s studio’s “New Reality” art works, Russian paintings and sculptures of the 1930-90s, East Prussian art and Kaliningrad regional art are considered the most important ones in terms of their artistic value.
At the moment the gallery is moving towardsthe creation of a resource center of museum pedagogics of the Kaliningrad region under the auspices of the Union of Museums of Russia and the State Russian Museum.
Apart from the International Biennale of Graphic Art which gathers artists from over 10 countries, the gallery holds regular exhibitions of artists from Germany, Sweden, Lithuania, Poland and other countries. The gallery has partnership relations with such international institutions as the International Committee Ars-Baltica, the Information Office of the Nordic Council of Ministers, the Swedish Institute, Goethe Institute, the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation and others.
The Kaliningrad Art Gallery aims at developing cooperation with national and international museums in the area of exhibition activities and museum pedagogics.
